5.7 magnitude earthquake hits New Zealand's Southland

An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale struck New Zealand's Southland on Thursday night, the GNS Science said, Xinhua reported.

The quake occurred at 7:28 p.m. New Zealand local time (0628 GMT Thursday) at a depth of 33 km, the New Zealand Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences reported.

The quake's epicenter was about 360 km southwest of the South Island city of Invercargill.

There were no reports of any damage or injuries. GNS said it was felt in the southern town of Riverston.
