Defender Sergio Ramos went close on 5 minutes with a header that saw Dutch keeper Maarten Stekelenburg dive full length to punch the ball clear.
The Netherlands had their first chance three minutes later when a mistake by Sergio Busquets allowed Dirk Kuyt to fire in a shot from 25 metres which Spanish goalkeeper Iker Casillas easily saved.
Ramos hit a powerful drive towards goal on 11 minutes, which defender John Heitinga blasted high over the bar for a corner. Seconds later David Villa volleyed into the side netting.
Robin van Persie was shown the yellow card after 15 minutes for a foul on Joan Capdevila.
