Peru recognizes 'sovereign' Palestine

Peru has joined the growing number of Latin American countries that have upgraded their recognition of Palestine to a statehood status, Press TV reported.

"Today the government communicated to the ambassador of Palestine in Lima recognition of the Palestinian state as free and sovereign," AFP quoted Peruvian Foreign Minister Jose Antonio Belaunde as saying on Monday.

Belaunde also stressed that the Monday's announcement was not made under any international pressure.

However, Lima has yet to specify whether the recognition is based on borders prior to the occupation of Palestinian territories in 1967.

Brazil led the move to recognize Palestine in South America late last year, and has since been joined by Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Guyana and Uruguay.
