Arrest of transsexual in Vietnam prompts dilemma over police cells

The arrest of a transsexual in Ho Chi Minh City has raised questions over gender segregation in police cells, dpa reported with reference to local media late Tuesday.

The arrest of Le Van Vu put police in a quandry when both male and female detainees refused to allow her to share their cell, Phap Luat newspaper reported.

Vu, who was picked up on suspicion of handling counterfeit money, is shown as male on her official identification card even though she has undergone surgery to become a woman, the report said.

She was transferred to Chi Hoa detention centre where a group of elderly women allowed her to share their cell.

There are no regulations on providing separate cells for transsexuals, a judge at the city's Supreme Court was quoted as saying.

One official at the detention centre said if transsexuals were kept with other prisoners they could be subject to harassment, according to the report.
