Thousands stage anti-US rally in Lahore

Thousands of Pakistanis have staged a protest against US violations of Pakistan's sovereignty and Washington's growing influence over the government in Islamabad, Press TV reports.

The protest was organized by Jamaat-e-Islami students and activists, who gathered in the eastern city of Lahore from across the country to voice their support for the battle against the US for national sovereignty.

"Pakistan is under threat and the Americans are openly threatening Pakistanis. They are intervening in our tribal areas and through drone attacks and they are also threatening that they can enter Pakistan with their forces and NATO forces," Jamaat-e-Islami's Hussain Ahmed said.

Religious party leaders criticized US intervention in Pakistan's domestic affairs and the Pakistani government's apologetic behavior towards the US.

Jamaat-e-Islami has called for the nation's unification against the US and its interfering in Pakistan's religious and national priorities.

Meanwhile, a vast majority of Pakistanis view the county's worsening security situation and instability the result of the US invasion of Afghanistan.

The US invaded Afghanistan with the official objective of curbing militancy and bringing peace and stability to the region. However, ten years after the occupation began, the region remains unstable and militancy has expanded to Pakistan.

Pakistan has lost more than 35,000 people in militant attacks and bomb explosions since 2007, according to the Associated Press. Millions more have been displaced by the wave of violence and militancy across the country.

Moreover, the US also has frequently carried out attacks by unmanned American planes on Pakistan's tribal areas. These attacks have left hundreds of people dead in the volatile region over the past years.

Washington claims the drone strikes target militants, although casualty figures indicate that the aerial bombings have led to the loss of hundreds of Pakistani civilian lives.
