UN urges rebels in North Mali to end ties with terrorists

The UN Security Council on Friday urged rebel groups in North Mali to cut off ties with the terrorists, including Al-Qaeda in Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and affiliated groups, DPA reported.

Following discussion on the troubled situation in Sahel and Mali, the council said that "all Malian rebel groups" should end ties with the terrorist groups as fighting has continued in the region.

The council voiced support for Mali's Interim President Dioncounda Traore, who is leading a transitional government following a military-led coup last year. Traore has been working to restore democratic institutions and organize general elections.

He has also requested the Economic Commission of Western African States, the UN and the European Union to work out details for the deployment of a regional force in Mali and help the democratic process.
