At least 14 people were left dead and many more missing after a tropical storm swept through Bangladesh's coastal areas, the government said Thursday, dpa reported.

The storm hit the districts of Noakhali, Bhola, Cox's Bazar and Chittagong late Wednesday, said Dalil Uddin, the officer on duty at the control room of the Disaster Management and Relief Ministry.

The storm damaged crops across a wide area as well as many homes in the poorer shantytowns, he said.

The government had dispatched relief material and cash handouts for those affected, said Shaheen Ul Islam, another officer at the ministry.

Strong squalls on the coast had prevented fisherman returning to shore, leaving many missing in the bay, private broadcaster Radio Today reported.
