Six Indian soldiers working as United Nations peacekeepers and their interpreter were injured in an attack by a rebel group in the volatile eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, officials said on Wednesday, reported dpa.

The soldiers were evacuated for treatment. Further details on their condition were not immediately known.

Five civilians were also killed by suspected FDLR Hutu rebels in the same vicinity, according to the UN-sponsored Radio Okapi. It appears that the peacekeepers responded to that attack and were subsequently ambushed.

An Indian soldier with the UN mission was killed in July by suspected M23 militants, a rival rebel group to the FDLR. M23, which emerged late last year, is allegedly supported by Rwanda.
