Japan condemns alleged trespassing by US serviceman on Okinawa

Japanese Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba Friday condemned a drunken US serviceman for allegedly trespassing at an apartment on the southern island of Okinawa, news reports said, DPA reported.

The minister called the incident "outrageous."

Japanese police were investigating the 24-year-old serving at the Kadena Air Base on Okinawa after he was accused of breaking into a third-floor apartment early Friday and hitting a 13-year-old boy, the Okinawa Times newspaper reported, citing local police.

The serviceman was hospitalized after jumping from the apartment to the ground.

The serviceman had been drinking at a bar on the first floor of the same building and became angry after the manager urged him to go home late Thursday, the paper said.

The incident occurred about two weeks after two US servicemen were accused of raping a Japanese woman on the island, which prompted the US military to impose a curfew on all of its personnel from 11 pm to 5 am.

The two incidents took place amid mounting anger among Okinawa residents against the United States and Japan over the deployment of 12 US MV-22 Osprey aircraft at the Marine Corp Air Station Futenma, located in residential areas on the island.
