Eighteen people were killed and five others remain trapped underground on Saturday after a gas and coal outburst in a mine pit in southwest China's Guizhou Province, local authorities said, Xinhua reported.

Eighteen people were killed and five others remain trapped underground on Saturday after a gas and coal outburst in a mine pit in southwest China's Guizhou Province, local authorities said, Xinhua reported.

The accident occurred at around 11 a.m. at the Xiangshui Coal Mine in Panxian County of the coal-rich Liupanshui City.

The coal mine is affiliated to the Guizhou Panjiang Group.

Altogether 28 miners were trapped underground when the accident happened, according to provincial government and Panjiang group sources.

As of 5:30 p.m., five miners had been rescued and five others were still trapped. Rescuers are searching for them.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
