The death toll in a collapsed building in Bangladesh rose to 656 as rescuers found more bodies in the wreckage Monday, officials said, dpa reported.

Forty-six bodies were recovered since Sunday evening in the rubble of an eight-storey building that housed five garment factories in Savar, 25 kilometres north-west of the capital Dhaka.

More than 2,400 people were injured in the accident that has put Bangladesh under pressure to meet international labour standards for its garment industry, which accounts for 79 per cent of export earnings.

Several people were still unaccounted for, an official at the disaster management control room said.

Bangladesh has been trying to implement a new safety plan devised in consultation with the International Labour Organisation.

Workers were evacuated from Rana Plaza building after major cracks developed, but factory owners reportedly forced employees back to work on April 24 just before it collapsed.
