President Uhuru Kenyatta said Kenya's security forces have defeated the attackers at the Westgate shopping mall, dpa reported.
"We have shamed and defeated our attackers. That part has been completed by our multi-agency team," he said in a televised address, adding that: "Our losses are immense."
He said the death toll is 61 civilians and 6 soldiers. Five gunmen were killed by gunfire, others apparently died when parts of the building collapsed. Eleven people are in custody. The president said two or three US citizens might have been involved in the attack.
Kenyatta declared three days of national mourning.
