A Cypriot police officer drowned Tuesday while attempting to rescue a Russian woman and her two children from a capsized boat near the island of Paphos in the Mediterranean island, Xinhua reported.
Another police officer who also participated in the rescue attempt was saved, but the woman remains missing.
The boat, with the young Russian couple and their two children aboard, overturned in heavy seas while sailing into a tourist port in Paphos.
The husband managed to swim ashore and alert police.
Two police officers set out in a rubber boat to find the missing boaters but their craft overturned in high waves. One of the officers managed to cling onto the boat but the other was washed away and drowned.
The capsized boat eventually washed ashore and marine police rescued the two children, a 10-month-old baby girl and a 3-year-old boy.
There was still no trace of the mother although an air and sea rescue operation was under way.
