Russia calls for end to violence in Syria

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Tuesday repeated Moscow's calls for an end to the violence in Syria, Xinhua reported.

In a phone conversation with Arab League (AL) chief Nabil al-Arabi, Lavrov also urged AL observers to monitor the action of both the Syrian authorities and the opposition, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.

"Lavrov stressed the need of an immediate end of violence in Syria.... emphasized that the primary focus of the observation mission in Syria should be not only on the fulfillment of the commitments assumed by the Syrian authorities, but also the subversive operations of the armed groups," the ministry said in a statement.

Lavrov also called on the Syrian opposition to decisively distinct itself from the armed groups in the interests of a broad national dialogue, as the AL has proposed, the ministry said.

Besides, Lavrov and Arabi also discussed the situation in the Middle East, especially the Palestinian-Israeli negotiations.

Syria has been wracked by six months of unrest, which its government blames on foreign conspiracy and armed thugs. Moscow has reiterated that the crisis in Syria could only be solved by its own people and rejected any foreign interventions into the country.
