UN's top climate change official Yvo de Boer to quit

Yvo de Boer, the United Nations' top climate official, announced on Thursday that he will resign from his post in July, his secretariat said, DPA reported.

Boer, executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) is to join consultancy group KPMG, as well as working with a number of universities, according to his office in Bonn.

"It was a difficult decision to make, but I believe the time is ripe for me to take on a new challenge," Boer said in a statement.

Boer was appointed to the position in 2006, and was the UN's chief negotiator at the Copenhagen Climate Change conference in December, which was widely criticized as falling short of its objectives.
