US military police have detained a US soldier suspected of being involved in a hit-and-run accident Wednesday on the Japanese island of Okinawa, the US Navy said, DPA reported.
A US military vehicle hit a car in the northern part of the subtropical island and drove away, leaving a 2-year-old boy injured, local media said. The boy's 45-year-old father and 10-year-old brother were also in the car.
Shortly after the accident, an unoccupied US Navy jeep was found crashed with its engine running on a road 12 kilometres from the accident site and near the US Marine Corps' Camp Schwab, local media said.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirofumi Hirano called the incident "extremely regrettable" and said the government would discuss the matter with US authorities.
