A Russian space capsule with more than one ton of trash from the International Space Station (ISS) on board burned up on re-entry into the atmosphere as planned on Monday, dpa reported according to the Itar-Tass news agency.
The remains of the Progress capsule landed in the Pacific Ocean's so-called spacecraft cemetery, a remote area several thousand kilometres east of New Zealand that is far removed from important shipping routes.
The manoeuvre took place without problems and did not harm the environment, the mission control centre in Moscow told Itar-Tass.
The capsule had undocked from the ISS a week ago and had since served as a laboratory.
Its successor is due to arrive at the ISS on September 10 with more than 2.5 tons materials on board.
