The White House warned Thursday of civil war in Syria and a proxy war involving Iran if Syrian President Bashar al-Assad does not stop "brutally murdering" the Syrian people, dpa reported.
White House spokesman Jay Carney said that the longer the current situation persists, the more likely the Syrian conflict will become a "sectarian civil war," spill over Syria's borders and become a "proxy war" with Iran and other powers in the region.
Carney charged that Iran has been playing a "malignant" role in Syria, and noted that Iran has "admitted involvement in the Syrian crisis by sending troops."
"That fact further highlights Iran's continued effort to expand its nefarious influence in the region and underscores Iran's fear of a Syria without the Assad regime," Carney said.
