US confirms death of three American citizens in Algeria

The United States has confirmed that three US citizens were killed in the terrorist attack in Algeria, with State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland saying it was "aware" that seven other Americans had survived, DPA reported.

Nuland released the names of the three dead on Monday and extended "deepest condolences to their families and friends."

Referring to a statement over the weekend from President Barack Obama, Nuland said "the blame for this tragedy rests with the terrorists who carried it out, and the United States condemns their actions in the strongest possible terms."

She said the US would "continue to work closely with the Government of Algeria to gain a fuller understanding of the terrorist attack." Washington will also work in the future with Algeria in combatting the terrorist threat, she said.
