The suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, has been moved from hospital to prison, broadcaster NBC reported Friday.

Tsarnaev, 19, was transferred from the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre, where he has been held since last week, NBC said citing the US Marshals Service, dpa reported.

The naturalized US citizen will now be detained in a prison at Fort Devens, Massachusetts.

Tsarnaev was captured alive but seriously wounded on April 19 after a massive manhunt. Hours earlier his 26-year-old brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, was killed in a shootout with police.

On Monday, he was charged with using a weapon of mass destruction. He faces life in prison or the death penalty if convicted.

The federal charges include one count of "using and conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction" and one count of "malicious destruction of property by means of an explosive device."

Investigators believe the Tsarnaev brothers were behind the twin bombings that took place at the finish line of the marathon on April 15, killing three people and injuring more than 200.

In addition to the three deaths at the finish line, a 26-year-old police officer was killed fours day later in a confrontation with the two brothers.

Bloomberg and New York police commissioner Ray Kelly Thursday said Tsarnaev told FBI interrogators the brothers had planned to drive to New York and detonated explosions in Times Square.
