Andreas Ghukasyan, candidate for the Presidency of Armenia, who have conducted a long-term hunger strike, has made a statement, Armenian Report says.

According to Ghukasyan, the February 18 elections once again proved that the government is not capable of conducting free and fair elections in Armenia.

"It became obvious that the Republican Party has used up all of its possibilities to act within the law. During the elections, over half a million people spoke out against the regime," the statement said.

The candidate emphasized in his statement that the decisive moment in which people should start deciding the political future of the country has come.

"Citizens and political forces may form the National Transitional Council, which will assume responsibility for conducting free elections," he said.

Presidential elections were held in Armenia on Feb.18. Incumbent President Serzh Sargsyan won the presidential elections winning 58.64 per cent of the vote. The First Foreign Minister of Armenia Raffi Hovannisian ranked second winning 36.75 per cent, while former Prime Minister Hrant Bagratyan ranked third after receiving 2.15 per cent of the vote.
