Armenia to attend CIS Chiefs of Staff Committee meeting in Baku

The Armenian Defence Ministry has specified the format of participation at a meeting of the Chiefs of Staff Committee of the CIS member states in Baku, Armenia Today reported.

Spokesperson for the Armenian Defence Ministry, Artsrun Hovhannisyan said that Armenia will be represented at the meeting by the representative of the Armenian Armed Forces in Moscow instead of the Chief of the General Staff of the Armenian Armed Forces, Colonel General Yuri Khachaturov.

Earlier, Armenia Today website reported that the Chief of the General Staff of Armenian Armed Forces, Colonel General Yuri Khachaturov would represent Armenia at the meeting.

The meeting of the Chiefs of Staff Committee of the CIS member states will be held in Baku on April 7-8. The event is to be held in Azerbaijan for the first time.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
