Journalists were arrested among others after the violent crackdown on the protesters in the Armenian capital of Yerevan, ARKA news agency reported June 23.

On morning, June 23, the police dispersed demonstrators protesting against the rise in price of electricity. The protesters were blocking the central Marshal Baghramyan Avenue.

The Armenian media outlets said the journalists of the Gala TV, the Radio Liberty's Armenian office, the Haykakan Zhamanak newspaper, the Hetq, News.am, Panarmenian.net news agencies were taken to various police stations.

Dozens of protesters were also taken to the police departments.

The law enforcement agencies promised later to give information about the number of detainees.

The media outlets also reported about the injured.

The protesters, who from June 19 were carrying out a three-day sit-in demonstration at the Liberty Square, started marching on Monday night towards the Armenia presidential administration's building.

However they were stopped by the police at the Marshal Baghramyan Avenue.

On June 17, Armenia's Public Services Regulatory Commission, considering a request from the distribution company, Electric Networks of Armenia, which is a subsidiary of the Inter RAO UES, raised the electricity tariffs by 6.93 Armenian drams (about $0.015).

This caused discontent among the population, who believes that the rise in the cost of electricity will lead to higher prices for essential goods and many services.
