Armenian opposition party leader tears ballot at referendum

Leader of the Armenian opposition party "Heritage", Raffi Ovanisian publicly tore a ballot during a referendum on constitutional amendments and threw it into a ballot box, RIA Novosti reported Dec. 6.

Today, a referendum on constitutional amendments is being held in Armenia.

The local news agency Armenia Today has quoted Ovanisian as saying that his act was a civilian protest against the state formed by the Republican Party, the ruling party of Armenia.

"A system, which is based on one person, on one party, and which is intended to be consolidated though this fake referendum is unacceptable for me as a citizen," he said at a polling station.

He also said that immediately after the voting, a rally will start at 20:00 local time (GMT +4).

Ovanisian said the changes in Armenia will start from that rally, and all those who want to take part in that process must come to the Liberty Square in Yerevan.
