Armenian parliament adopts draft of new government structure

The National Assembly (Parliament) of Armenia adopted amendments to the law ‘the Structure of the Government of Armenia ' in the first reading at a special session on Sept. 27.

The document was voted in favor of by 77 deputies, two voted against it, while 9 abstained, RIA Novosti reported.

Representing the document in Parliament, Armenian Minister of Justice Arpine Hovhannisyan said that a number of ministries and departments will undergo major structural changes, in particular, the four ministries will be restructured in accordance with the amendments.

According to Hovhannisyan, the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources will be renamed to the Ministry of Energy Infrastructures and Natural Resources, the Ministry of Economy – the Ministry of Investment and Business Support, the Ministry of Transport and Communications – the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology.

The Ministry of Urban Development will be abolished; the State Committee for Architecture and protection of historical and cultural values will work instead of it.

Hovhannisyan noted that the changes are due to the new government priorities.

Hrant Bagratyan from the opposition faction of the Armenian National Congress said they made concrete proposals on September 26 and would like to know if they were accepted.

Parliament Speaker Galust Sahakyan informed the discussion of the draft law will continue until the second reading.
