Georgian soldiers awarded U.S. medals for participation in Iraqi operations

U.S. Ambassador to Georgia John Bass awarded medals to four Georgian soldiers who fought in Iraq. Corporal Zurab Gvenetadze who died while executing his military duty was among those to receive a medal. The Medal of Bravery was given to his father by the ambassador.

U.S. Ambassador to Georgia John Bass awarded medals to four Georgian soldiers who fought in Iraq. Corporal Zurab Gvenetadze who died while executing his military duty was among those to receive a medal. The Medal of Bravery was given to his father by the ambassador.

Gvenetadze died May 2, 2008. He was buried in Tbilisi. Heh was the only Georgian soldier to die in Iraq.

The Georgian contingent in Iraq consisted of 2,000 soldiers who were urgently withdrawn during the Russian-Georgian war in 2008.
