Georgian parliament with 80 votes "for" and one "against" on Friday approved in the third and final reading of the law "On amnesty", that was initiated by the president of the country Mikheil Saakashvili.

The amnesty will apply to all articles of the Criminal Code of Georgia, including grave crimes. Prison sentence date to persons who committed murder, rape and other serious crimes will reduce by a quarter.

This decision caused a protest by representative of parliamentary majority Koba Davitashvili, who voted against it.

The voting is not attended by MPs from the minority, those temporarily not participate in the meeting of the parliament because of the incident in Kutaisi.

As a result of the amnesty, 3000 people will leave prison. The amnesty also get sentenced for drug using persons and committed less serious crimes. Prisoners will be released after the procedures.

In addition, half the sentence will be reduced for women, underage and persons that committed economic crimes. There will also be shortened probation for two to three years (currently probation takes eight to nine years).

In addition, the draft law "On Amnesty" adopted new article providing for the release of political prisoners.

Georgian parliament adopted a list of political prisoners, which are 190 people. Law comes into force after publication.

Venice Commission advised the Georgian Parliament to postpone the adoption of the law.
