Preliminary court session on Georgian senior officials’ cases postponed

A preliminary court session on the case of the former deputy defence minister Data Akhalaia and other senior officials of the Constitutional Security Department of the Georgian Interior Ministry will be held on March 1, Akhalaia’s lawyer Irakli Zakareishvili told reporters on Wednesday.

A preliminary court session on the case of the former deputy defence minister Data Akhalaia and other senior officials of the Constitutional Security Department of the Georgian Interior Ministry will be held on March 1, Akhalaia's lawyer Irakli Zakareishvili told reporters on Wednesday.

He said the Prosecutor General's Office appealed to the court to postpone the preliminary hearing saying it is necessary to complete the investigation of the event.

Earlier the preparatory court session was scheduled for Jan.17. Prior to this the court sentenced David Akhalaia, Soso Topuridze, Oleg Melnikov and Geronti Alania to a preliminary two-month imprisonment. They were put on the international wanted list. They are accused of abuse of power and beating an employee of Mtatsminda-Krtsanisi Police.

One of them - Oleg Melnikov has been arrested in Ukraine and the process of his extradition to Georgia is underway.
