Over 8,000 prisoners amnestied in Georgia

Around 8,503 prisoners were released on the basis of the law on "Amnesty" in Georgia on March 9, the Georgian Ministry of Corrections and Legal Assistance said today.

Around 8,503 prisoners were released on the basis of the law on "Amnesty" in Georgia on March 9, the Georgian Ministry of Corrections and Legal Assistance said today.

Around 7,699 prisoners, including 7,431 men (40 of them - minors) and 238 women were released in February 2013.

The law on "Amnesty" was approved by the Georgian Parliament on December 21, 2012.

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili vetoed a part of the law relating to political prisoners and those who have committed crimes against minors on December 27. However, on December 28 the legislative body overcame a presidential veto. Afterwards, the law was signed by chairman of the Georgian parliament, by entering into force on January 13.
