The Prosecutor General of Georgia Archil Kbilashvili thinks that the questioning of President Mikhail Saakashvili in connection with the investigation of the August war is possible.
We are talking about questioning as a component of the investigation, and it is not an end in itself, he said at a press conference on Tuesday.
"It is not pre-determined, who should be questioned. When a group is created, a plan of investigation is formed; the need for interrogation of persons who are related to the issue will be identified. Logically, the president can also be questioned," Prosecutor General said.
However, he noted that Mikheil Saakashvili cannot be questioned against his will.
"The president has an immunity, and there are no legal mechanisms allowing to question him against his will," Kbilashvili said.
A few days ago, Prime Minister of Georgia Bidzina Ivanishvili announced the necessity to investigate the causes and circumstances of the August war and stressed that the president will come for questioning as many times as he is called.
Responding to this, Saakashvili said that he is not going to cooperate with the commission even a minute.
Large scale military actions were launched in South Ossetia in Georgia on August 8, 2008.
Later, Russian troops occupied Tskhinvali and expelled the Georgian military. Russia recognised the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia late in August. Tbilisi ended diplomatic relations with Moscow in response and has declared the two unrecognised republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia occupied territories.
