Georgian parliament on Monday at a special meeting finally approved the amnesty bill that exempts from criminal liability persons, who produced materials containing personal privacy of citizens as a result of illegal surveillance till December 31, 2012, as well as those individuals who voluntarily gave such material to law enforcement agencies in three months after the entry into force of this law.
Under the bill, the amnesty will affect the provisions of Article 157 of the Criminal Code of Georgia relating to the illicitly obtaining and keeping of personal or family secrets, as well as Article 158 and 159 of the Georgian CC, which respectively relate to breach the confidentiality of private communications, or violation of the secrecy of private correspondence, telephone conversations, or transmit personal message another way.
Amnesty bill, authored by the chairman of the Human Rights Committee, member of Georgian Dream Eka Beseliya, will enter into force after it will be signed by President Mikheil Saakashvili.
