President of the European Olympic Committees (EOC) Patrick Hickey has advised Georgia not to boycott the Sochi Olympic Games.

The EOC welcomes the Georgian National Olympic Committee's (GNOC) decision taken in May to participate at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, Hickey told journalists in Tbilisi on Friday.

GNOC has received a petition signed by 30,000 citizens who want a rejection of the country's participation at the Games.

The Georgian Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Levan Kipiani, commenting on Hickey's statement said the recommendations of the EOC president are very important for Georgia.

"The country's position has been and will be based on adherence to the ideas of the international Olympic movement," he said.
