The U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland believes that Georgia should continue to set contacts with Abkhazia and Tskhinvali.

"There is a need to set contacts with Abkhazians and Ossetians so that they would also become involved in the democratic processes and prosperity of Georgia. Georgia can offer them to become a part of Europe together with it. They deserve it, as they are Georgian citizens," Victoria Nuland said at a final press conference in Tbilisi on Dec.6.
She once again called on Russia to fulfill commitments made in 2008.

"We express concern not only over the "borders", but also over the presence of Russian troops in Georgia's territory," Nuland said.

Large scale military action was launched in South Ossetia on August 8, 2008. Later, Russian troops occupied Tskhinvali and expelled the Georgian military.

Russia recognised the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in late August. In response, Tbilisi ended diplomatic relations with Moscow and has called the two unrecognised republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia occupied territories.
