After lengthy discussions and debates the Georgian parliament adopted the draft code on local self-governance and the ensuing amendments.
The draft code was adopted in the second reading at an extraordinary meeting held today. It was supported by 84 MPs, whereas 14 MPs voted against it.
Earlier an alternative version of this code was put on vote. It was presented by the United National Movement party. The draft code was not supported - 17 MPs voted for it, while 45 MPs voted against it.
The draft code on local self-governance was adopted in the second reading without the article, dealing with the temporal order for determining the municipalities' staff listing. This was one of the contentious issues, which will be later reviewed by the parliament.
It was also decided that the amendments to the electoral code will not be discussed as part of the self-governance package.
During the parliament's meeting it was emphasized that all issues regarding the electoral code will be discussed by an inter-faction group and only following this, they will be submitted to the parliament.
