Chairman of the Georgian parliament David Usupashvili received an American delegation headed by Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Thomas Melia on April 24.

The parties discussed the upcoming local elections in Georgia, the situation in Ukraine and the general situation in the region, the Georgian parliament told Trend.

"Holding the local elections at a high level will be another test for Georgian democracy," Usupashvili added.

The guests showed an interest in the activity of the Georgian parliament, in particular anti-discrimination legislation and its terminology.

Melia said that the U.S. supports Georgia in the observance and protection of human rights.

"Georgia is an important partner of the U.S. in the Caucasus region," Melia said. "The U.S supports the development of democratic institutions in Georgia."
