NATO plays an important role in ensuring security in the region, the president of Georgia Giorgi Margvelashvili said Sept. 4 during his meeting with NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

The meeting took place before the start of the NATO summit in Cardiff, the presidential administration reported.

Rasmussen congratulated Margvelashvili on his 45th birthday and wished him success before the meeting.

"Alliance adequately considers the success of Georgia's integration into NATO, and this progress will be noted at the summit, and that will be a new impetus for the integration," Rasmussen said.

The parties discussed the package which will be offered to Georgia on the path of rapprochement with NATO. NATO Secretary General said that the implementation of this package will even more bring Georgia and the alliance together.

Margvelashvili expressed hope that the summit will increase the safety and security of Georgia.
