The servicemen of the mountain-reconnaissance battalion of the armed forces guarding an Air Force base in Kandahar province returned from Afghanistan to Georgia on Sept. 16.

Around 149 servicemen of the battalion met the head of the General Staff of the Georgian Armed Forces Vakhtang Kapanadze and U.S. ambassador to Georgia Richard Norland at the Alekseevka airfield.

An awarding ceremony of Georgian servicemen, as part of ISAF, has been recently held in Afghanistan. The head of ISAF Regional Command, Major-General Michael Bills personally delivered the medals to the servicemen of the mining and reconnaissance battalion of the Georgian armed forces.

Bills thanked Georgian servicemen for their contribution to security and stability in Afghanistan, participation in the ISAF mission.

The mining and reconnaissance battalion of the Georgian Armed Forces together with ISAF other divisions ensured security of the base in Kandahar, patrolling in the area of military operations.

The servicemen will continue returning from Afghanistan to Georgia. Around 900 of 1,700 servicemen of the Georgian contingent will serve in Afghanistan.
