Georgian Foreign Minister Maia Panjikidze resigned from her post. She made the statement of resignation at a special briefing at the Georgian Foreign Ministry.

She took this step after Irakli Alasania, the leader of her Free Democrats party, was sacked from the post of the minister of defense by the prime minister, according to Panjikidze.

Panjikidze also announced her withdrawal from the ruling coalition Georgian Dream.

"In these circumstances it is clear that the minister of defense was pursued for political reasons, and it is an attack on pro-Western forces in the Georgian government," she said.

Her deputies Davit Zalkaliani, Tamar Beruchashvili and Davit Jalagania resigned together with the minister.
