Georgia attaches great importance to effective work of intelligence service, PM says

Tbilisi, Georgia, Dec. 8

By Nana Kirtzkhalia - Trend:

Government attaches great importance to strengthening of state institutions, institutional formation and development of Georgian special services, Georgia's Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said Dec. 8.

He made the remarks during a visit to a new training center of Georgia's intelligence service.

The prime minister spoke about the challenges on the path to the Euro-Atlantic integration and said Georgia needs a strong intelligence service for a corresponding response to them.

He went on to add that a timely identification of threats and preliminary informing authorities will significantly reduce risks.

"In the past years, the intelligence service of Georgia didn't have an adequate support from the authorities," the PM said. "If not for this inappropriate attitude towards the service, our country would have avoided a lot of problems."

Garibashvili said that today the Georgian government attaches great importance to an effective work of the intelligence service, because it ensures the country's safety.

He went on to add that special attention should be paid to the development of intensive relations with partner special services, and an interagency coordination is needed between the Interior Ministry, Foreign Ministry, Defense Ministry and other government agencies in order to improve the intelligence work.
