The extradition of Georgian ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili is a matter of bilateral relations, Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland said at a briefing in Tbilisi Courtyard Feb. 17.

"The US will not comment on this issue," she said.

"As far as we know, the ex-president was invited by a member of the general advisory group, founded by President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko," she said. "As you know, Ukraine strives to ensure its role in the international arena. Sakakashvili has rich experience in this field and in the field of reforms."

Nuland said that Saakashvili is a private person and therefore Georgia's requirement for his extradition is in the bilateral plane.

She said that Georgia and Ukraine are mutually connected.

"At present, Georgia and Ukraine aspire to Europe," she said. "Today is a very important moment for your countries. Both countries need each other to address the vital issues."
