The opening ceremony of the first European Games in Baku has become a grand occasion of sport, the Georgian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Teymuraz Sharashenidze told Trend after the ceremony.

"The colorful show and a great organization became another proof of Azerbaijan's development," the ambassador said.

The first European Games Baku 2015 set the bar high for the hosts of the following European Games, according to the diplomat.

The high status of the sporting event is also proved by the fact that the opening was attended by the highest representatives of 50 European states, he said.

The grand sporting event in Azerbaijan brought together not only European athletes, but also all the people of the continent, according to Sharashenidze.

Baku 2015 is the first-ever European Games, an exciting and innovative multi-sport event for the continent that took place on June 12 and will last until June 28, 2015.

There will be a total of 20 sports at Baku 2015: 16 Olympic sports and four non-Olympic sports. More than 6,000 athletes from across Europe will be representing their nations over 17 days of competition.

Baku was awarded the games by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in December 2012.
