China supports Palestinian state, but talks with Israel needed

China's Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on Monday said his government supports an independent Palestinian state, which should be the outcome of negotiations with Israel on the two-state solution, dpa reported.

Yang reaffirmed Beijing's support to grant UN membership to the Palestinian people.

"We support efforts to achieve the two-state solution through political negotiations so as to establish, on the basis of the 1967 borders, an independent Palestinian state that enjoys full sovereignty with East Jerusalem as its capital," Yang said in an address to the UN General Assembly.

He called for Syria and Israel, and for Lebanon and Israel, to hold talks to settle their disputes.

Turning to the violence in Syria, Yang urged Damascus to exercise "restraint, avoid any form of violence and more bloodshed," and embark on reform and dialogue to end the current crisis.
