US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will testify before a congressional committee about last year's terrorist attack on the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya, the chairman announced Monday, dpa reported.

Representative Ed Royce, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said the outgoing secretary of state would testify on January 23 about the September 11 attack that killed the ambassador and three other Americans.

"It is important to learn all we can about what happened in Benghazi because at the end of the day, it could happen again," Royce said.

Clinton's testimony has been expected since she returned to work last week after recovering from a concussion mid-December. She was hospitalized for treatment of a blood clot between her brain and skull.

Congress is investigating why the State Department failed to anticipate the attack, and demanding better security measures.

A Senate committee released a report last week blaming the department for failing to adequately respond to mounting security threats ahead of the attack.
