At least 12 people were killed and 15 others wounded on Friday as two bombings struck a town in northern Iraq, said the police, Xinhua reported.

A roadside bomb went off in Tuz Khurmatu, some 170 km north of Baghdad, and soon the second one exploded as people rushed to the scene, a local police source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The blasts killed eight Kurds, two Turkmans and two Arabs, and wounded 15 others in the ethnically mixed town, he said.

Iraq is witnessing its worst eruption of violence in recent years, which raises fears that the country is sliding back to full- blown civil conflict that peaked in 2006 and 2007, when monthly death toll sometimes exceeded 3,000.
