US: Syria must meet obligations to destroy chemical weapons

The United States calls on Syria to meet its obligations to destroy its chemical weapons stockpile amid concerns the regime is still in possession of more than 90 per cent of its most dangerous chemical weapons, dpa reported.

"The international community is poised and ready to destroy Syria's chemical weapons as soon as the chemical weapons have reached the Syrian port of Lattakia," White House spokesman Jay Carney says.

"It is the Assad regime's responsibility to transport those chemicals safely to facilitate their removal. We expect them to meet their obligation to do so."

The US joins the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons in calling on Damascus to speed up efforts to meet its international commitments "as quickly and safely as possible," he said.
