Washington and Abu Dhabi agreed to enhance bilateral collaboration in space security, according to a US State Department press release.

"The United States and the United Arab Emirates officials discussed strengthening civil and national security space collaboration," the press release, issued on Friday, said.

The discussions took place as United Arab Emirates (UAE) Space Agency officials visited Washington, DC March 16-20 to explore aspects of space cooperation with the United States.

"Initial discussions focused on space policy and regulatory developments, long term sustainability of space activities, space security, space exploration, bilateral space science cooperation, weather monitoring, the use of satellite-based applications and exchanges of best practices," the release read.

The two countries agreed on developing a strategic approach to elaborate space systems on which they would rely for economic, environmental, security, and social well-being, according to the release.

"Additionally, discussions may explore opportunities for fair and open global trade and commerce for commercial space systems," the release said.

Future areas of the two countries' space cooperation may include land and sea resource management, space situational awareness, positioning, navigation, satellite communications, early warning, according to the State Department.
