At least eight civilians have been killed and over two dozen others injured when foreign-backed militants carried out a mortar attack in Syria's northwestern city of Aleppo, Press TV reported.

A police source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said terrorists lobbed a number of mortar shells at al-Khaldiyeh neighborhood of the violence-plagued city, located 355 kilometers (220 miles) north of the capital Damascus on Saturday, Syria's official SANA news agency reported.

The source added that the projectiles also caused damage to a number of houses as well as several cars parked at the residential area.

Those injured in the attack were transferred to nearby hospitals to receive medical treatment.

Cities and towns across Syria have frequently come under bomb attacks as well as mortar and rocket fire by militants since crisis erupted in the country more than four years ago.

On March 23, at least 12 people were killed and 30 others wounded in a mortar attack by foreign-backed militants in Aleppo, a day after four people were killed in other mortar attacks in the city.

The bombing came as Syrian forces and a number of different militant groups have been fighting for control over Aleppo, Syria's major business town and the country's second largest city.

Syria has been grappling with a deadly crisis since March 2011. The violence fueled by Takfiri groups has so far claimed the lives of over 210,000 people, according to reports. New figures show that over 76,000 people, including thousands of children, lost their lives in Syria last year.

Over 3.8 million Syrians have left their country since the beginning of the crisis. More than 7.2 million Syrians have also become internally displaced, according to the United Nation.
