Pentagon: Russia demands US planes avoid Syrian sky

The Pentagon says Moscow has called on Washington to remove the aircraft of the US Air Force from Syrian airspace.

"This morning a Russian official in Baghdad informed the US embassy's staff that Russian military aircraft will today start sorties against the IS over Syria," RIA Novosti quoted an official representative of the Pentagon as saying Sept. 30.

"He [the Russian official] also demanded that the US planes avoid Syria's airspace during those sorties," said the Pentagon representative.

Earlier it was reported that Syrian President Bashar Assad sent a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin asking the Russian military support.

President Putin appealed to Russia's Federation Council for permission to use the Russian armed forces abroad. The Federation Council granted the request.

The head of the Kremlin administration, Sergei Ivanov told reporters Sept. 30 that the decision concerns Syria and the matter rests only in an operation of the air forces.
