02:58 (GMT+4) At least eight policemen were killed and three wounded in an attack by Islamist militants on a security checkpoint in Egypt's New Valley province in the Western Desert, the Interior Ministry said on Monday, Reuters reported.

State television said the attack took place at around 8.15 p.m. in the Naqb checkpoint more that 600 kilometers (370 miles) southwest of Cairo.

At least two of the attackers were killed, the Interior Ministry said. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

01:10 (GMT+4) At least six people were killed in an attack by militants on a police checkpoint in the New Valley province in southwestern Egypt on Monday, Egypt's state television said, Sputnik reported.

According to local media, the attack took place on the Kharga-Asyut road, about 70 kilometers (some 44 miles) from the Al Kharga city, and the gunfight between the government security forces and militants is still underway.
