Israel announced on Friday plans to build at least 1,400 new homes in Jewish settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, which could put more strain on peace talks with the Palestinians, dpa reported.
The Housing Ministry said that 800 homes would be built in the West Bank and 600 in East Jerusalem, areas which the Palestinians want for a future state, Haaretz newspaper reported.
US Secretary of State John Kerry is pressing both Israel and the Palestinians to seal a framework agreement before an April deadline set for peace talks launched in July.
The Palestinians say Jewish settlements on land they want for a state make peace more elusive.
